Gaming accessory maker Razer has released its PC Remote Play app, enabling gamers to stream games from their PC to an iPhone or iPad either on a home network, or across the Internet on 5G.
PC gaming continues to be a major segment of the gaming industry, and it's become more portable with initiatives like Steam Deck growing in popularity. Razer, meanwhile, has introduced a way to play PC games on the go using an iPhone or iPad.
Available for iOS and Android devices, Razer PC Remote Play is an app for streaming gameplay from a PC to a smartphone or tablet. Games are rendered on the user's home PC, streamed over a network or cellular connection, and are viewable and playable on the mobile device.
This isn't an entirely new concept, as app-based game streaming has been around for a while, with Steam Link performing very similar duties for quite a few years already. However, Razer's execution on the concept adds some new elements to the mix.
For a start, games are streamed from Razer Cortex, a Windows app that is used to compile the user's game collection into a list. This can work with games installed from Steam, Epic Game Store, PC Game Pass, and other digital storefronts, meaning you're not limited to just Steam purchases as with Steam Link.
The games appear on the iPhone via another app, Razer Nexus, which is used to browse the game catalog and to launch titles. Razer Nexus is also used to customize controls and to record and share gameplay footage.
There's also support for all iOS-compatible controllers in the app, including the Razer Kishi. On iPad, there's full compatibility with a keyboard, mouse, and trackpad, which can be better suited for some game genres.
Going one stage further, Razer PC Remote Play also automatically optimizes the stream for the mobile device being played on. This includes matching the resolution and refresh rate, without locking the game to fixed aspect ratios.
Razer PC Remote Play is free to download from the App Store, and requires iOS 18 or iPadOS 18 to run. On the PC side, it needs either Windows 10 or Windows 11 to be installed.
